The award of a $15-million grant in 2008 from Lilly Endowment to Indiana University to establish Pervasive Technology Institute (PTI) marks both the beginning of a new collaborative enterprise and the culmination of years of concerted effort establishing IU a leader in advanced technology. PTI exists due to the long-range vision and dedication, in addition to the financial support, provided by Indiana University, Lilly Endowment, and our federal funding agencies.

PTI is a hub of innovation, leading Indiana University’s efforts in advanced information technology research, development, and delivery. PTI enterprise brings together IU’s top experts and innovators from a range of disciplines, including informatics, information technology, computing, and law. PTI structure facilitates innovation through collaboration across the Indiana University community—linking informatics and computer science researchers and faculty with expert staff researchers and technicians from University Information Technology Services (UITS), while providing access to world-class facilities and computational hardware.

Nowhere else but PTI will you find leading computer scientists, informatics faculty, high-performance computing and visualization professionals, legal and security experts, librarians, and students working shoulder to shoulder and brain to brain to push the boundaries of human knowledge and create new foundations for the innovations of tomorrow. Together, this unique group of collaborators is developing cyberinfrastructure and software tools that will help our state and nation meet challenges ranging from economic development and information security to global climate change, storm prediction, and the management of global pandemics.

The formidable challenges and unprecedented opportunities of our time cannot be met or realized by any one person or organization. This is why Indiana University and PTI are investing in the future of innovation by building world-class facilities and cyberinfrastructure that are enabling path-breaking research—across campus, across the state, across the nation, and across oceans.
